Current Program
Positive Legacy is the non-profit arm of Cloud 9 Adventures. The mission of our 501(c)(3) charity organization is to create meaningful opportunities for music fans and musicians to become active participants in reducing the environmental impact of the events we participate in, and to do something positive for the communities we visit.
As we travel the globe we strive to transcend cultural boundaries by learning about the needs, hopes and dreams of the communities we visit, and by taking action to connect with them and be of service to them. Positive Legacy works to develop service activities that music fans and musicians can participate in to bring a deeper sense of purpose to their entertainment and travel experiences. Take a look at our outreach project details below and find out how you can do your part to Leave a Positive Legacy in Costa Maya and Roatan!
Positive Legacy: Costa Maya, Mexico
with Zach Deputy, Matt Butler, David Gans, and members of Greensky Bluegrass Support the KM55 School and Library - Beach Clean Up, Community Celebration, Benefit, Music & Fun
Jam Cruise 9 returns to Costa Maya this year providing a wonderful opportunity to build upon our Positive Legacy work from Jam Cruise 7. In 2009, Cloud 9 provided financial support to help rebuild and resupply the KM55 “kinder” school in Mahahual and Las Casitas, which were heavily damaged by a Category 5 Hurricane. Also provided were additional donations of school supplies, solar ovens, refurbished laptops, and musical instruments to support those communities.
Join Positive Legacy for the opportunity to reconnect with the local community in Mahahual. Proceeds from this event and a donation from Cloud 9 will support additional renovations at KM55 School and support a local library project. We will start the day with a brief visit to the nearby KM55 School. We will then walk a mile stretch along the beach with the school children, picking up trash as we go. Then we will spend the rest of the day enjoying a song and dance presentation by the kids, lunch prepared by local cooks, tasty treats courtesy of Ice Cream Man, music by Jam Cruise Artists, and free time to swim in the ocean, play soccer and tour the town as desired.
The cost of this benefit event is $70 per person, $35 for kids. A portion of the ticket price will be tax-deductible as a charitable donation.
with ALO, Nathan Moore and Matt Butler Support the SOL International Foundation Local Community outreach, education, fundraising, music and the arts
Our Positive Legacy event in Roatan supports the School of Life (SOL) International Foundation’s commitment to enhancing the standards of education, arts and athletics in Roatan. With help from Jam Cruise attendees, Cloud 9 and Positive Legacy will also be presenting donations to the SOL International Foundation and the Roatan Children’s Fund.
This excursion includes local style cuisine, transportation, community activities, mural painting activity led by LEBO and a live local reggae band featuring very special Jam Cruise Artists. Ice Cream Man will be bringing their tasty treats to the island to share with the youth and all in attendance. There will be an opportunity for guests to have free beach time or visit the famous Carambola Gardens, a beautiful botanical garden and lush tropical forest which is a one minute walk from SOL headquarters. Admission to the gardens is an additional $6.
The ticket cost for this benefit event is $75.00 per person, $37.50 for kids. A portion of the ticket price will be tax-deductible as a charitable donation.
Jam Cruise 8’s Positive Legacy Auction was a huge success, raising nearly $20,000! Proceeds support Positive Legacy's meaningful environmental and humanitarian projects. Past auction items have included signed poster art & photographs, LEBO live paintings, VIP ticket packages to summer festivals, autographed guitars, handmade jewelry, and a whole lot more. Don't miss the auction on Jam Cruise 9! If you have something that you would like to donate for the auction on Jam Cruise 9, please contact ann (at) jamcruise.com for more information. All auction items are tax-deductible donations that support Positive Legacy projects.
JC8 Marching Band Instrument Donation
After beginning our fund-raising efforts and doing a needs assessment during Caribbean Holidaze in 2009, the Positive Legacy team learned that the South East Saint Ann Constituency in Jamaica had a dream to start a marching band in their community…but they couldn’t afford the instruments. In partnership with Music Matters, a music education company based in Atlanta, Georgia, Cloud 9 Adventures donated a full set of instruments needed to realize the dream. Thank you to Music Matters for making this possible! .
JC8 School Supplies Drive
Many families in Jamaica struggle to afford the basic necessities, much less luxuries such as school supplies. Approximately 200 Jam Cruise passengers donated backpacks & school supplies to the South East Saint Ann Civic Committee for distribution to the children in their district. Thank you for your generosity!
JC 8 Laptop Drive
Thank you to the seven Jam Cruise passengers who donated their used laptops to the Rural Retreat Community Center in Jamaica. And a special thank you to Matt Whildin for installing them with fresh operating systems and wireless network cards. Rural Retreat is thrilled to now be able to establish a computer learning program for the people in their community!
Do you have a laptop you’d like to donate to a needy school in one of the communities Jam Cruise visits?
Computers are a luxury that few people in the Caribbean can afford. Here’s a chance for Jam Cruise passengers to Leave a Positive Legacy and make a difference in the lives of others. If you have a used laptop you would like to donate for future Jam Cruise humanitarian efforts, please e-mail Matt at mwhildin@att.net to discuss your computer’s specifications and the minimum system requirements.
JC8 Soccer Gear Donation
Thank you to Uniform Pals for donating soccer gear and uniforms to the Rural Retreat Community Center in Jamaica. Uniform Pals runs a grassroots organization to coordinate donations from local families in the Boca Raton area, making it easy for kids to pass along their soccer gear when they've outgrown it.
JC8 Weed Whacker Donation
The silent auction at Caribbean Holidaze raised the funds to purchase a professional grade weed whacker, and Jam Cruise delivered the Husqvarna 335FR brush cutter when we visited the Community Center on January 5, 2010. Now the community can play soccer whenever they want without having to borrow a weed whacker to mow the field.
JC8 Cash Donation to Rural Retreat Community Center
Cloud 9 donated $1,000 to the community center so they could purchase much needed tables and chairs for their community gatherings.
JC8 Jamaica Community Center Celebration
More than 100 passengers and artists visited the Rural Retreat Community Center in Claremont, Jamaica and presented the donations mentioned above. Our sincere thanks to LEBO who painted a mural on the wall of the Center, Toubab Krewe and special guests who played a set and jammed with the locals, Ice Cream Man for the tasty treats, the Jam Cruise passengers who participated and all the members of the community there in Jamaica who made this day so beautiful!
JC8 Grand Cayman REEF Adventure & Benefit
Over 140 passengers and artists joined the Positive Legacy team on Grand Cayman for a day of education, music and fun in the sun to benefit REEF - the Reef Environmental Education Foundation. Participants learned of REEF's efforts to protect threatened grouper spawning habitat and eradicate the invasive lionfish species, and what divers, snorkelers, and fish consumers can do to aid in those efforts. And while the ocean was too dangerous to snorkel or scuba that day, all enjoyed a wonderful afternoon of ocean side sunshine listening to musical performances by Ryan Montbleau, Hot Buttered Rum (Aaron Redner, Bryan Horne, Erik Yates, Nat Keefe), Tim and Nicki Bluhm (Mother Hips), and Tim Carbone (Railroad Earth). Thanks to all who participated in this benefit event!
JC8 Everyone Orchestra
A very special thank you to Matt Butler for conjuring up the most epic EO performance ever to support our carbon offsetting efforts. Much appreciation to the following artists for their participation: Andy Goessling, Jans Ingber, Ben Thomas, Joel Cummings, Tim Carbone, Greg Loiacono, Eric Yates, Rob Koritz, Chuck Morris, Dave Watts, Jeff Coffin, Col. Bruce Hampton, Will Bernard, Justin Perkins, Luke Quaranta, David Pransky, Ryan Montblaeu, Debrissa McKinney, Bryan Horne, Suzy Q, Lee Oskar and the conductor Matt Butler!
If you missed this incredible performance you can still listen to the magical music by purchasing the Cruise Tunes from the show.
JC7 Solar Oven Finds a Welcomed Home in Costa Maya
We received some heart-warming news about one of the solar ovens we donated on Jam Cruise 7. This one made it's way to Chacchoben, which is a two-thousand year old pueblo in the jungle in Costa Maya. The recipient is a 90-year-old man who has lived in the pueblo all his life. We received some photos which captured how emotional he was when the oven was presented to him. And another, which showed what he used to cook with daily until receiving the new solar oven. The images were priceless, and made it very apparent that changing lives is our greatest reward!
JC7 Charitable Donation Drive
JC7 passengers filled the entire side alcove of the Amber Bar with donations of school supplies, clothing, shoes, music instruments and sports equipment… the equivalent of 4 pallets. These items were donated to several needy schools and an orphanage in Belize and Costa Maya. Jam Cruise passengers rock! Note: Despite an unfortunate hassle with customs clearance in Costa Maya, we were able to donate the remaining items to The Jack and Jill Children’s Center in Fort Lauderdale.
Special thanks to Conscious Alliance for donating a pallet of organic fruit leather to our beneficiaries in Belize and Costa Maya.
Passengers donated 9 laptop computers which were refurbished, installed with wireless network cards and given to our beneficiaries.
Cloud 9 donated 10 solar ovens in partnership with Solar Oven Society to our beneficiaries in Belize and Costa Maya.
JC7 Intercultural Celebration in Belize
While in Belize, 70 passengers and artists joined the green team for a day of learning, connection and giving at the Monkey Bay Wildlife Sanctuary. Participants presented the passenger donations and solar ovens to our beneficiaries, and were treated to informative talks by local community leaders and environmental educators, as well as a fabulous performance by the Maroon Creole Drum School and local dancers. The Maroon Creole Drum School is led by Emmet Smith, a former pro soccer player. Under his lead, their village teaches children indigenous drumming rhythms, dancing and soccer. Cloud 9 Adventures donated 2 full team sets of uniforms, cleats, socks and shin guards to their community to further the development of their youth soccer program.
JC7 Costa Maya Beach Clean Up
While in Costa Maya, nearly 100 Jam Cruise passengers joined the green team and 50 children from the Limones Primary School, along with local residents, community leaders and business owners to clean up a stretch of beach just a few miles from the port. In less than an hour the group picked up approximately 1 ton of trash! After the clean up, participants joined our new friends in Costa Maya for a day at the beach, presented the Jam Cruise donations to several local schools, frolicked in the ocean, played beach soccer and enjoying each other’s company and a delicious meal. This event demonstrates that being stewards to the earth is not only the right thing to do, but it brings people together and can be a lot of fun!
JC7 Kinder Repair Project in Costa Maya
The green team worked with Padres de Familia kinder in Km 55, a school in Costa Maya, Mexico devastated by Hurricane Dean, to make much needed repairs to their facility. Following the hurricane in 2007, all that remained of the school was a simple cinderblock structure with incomplete plywood walls and a tar paper roof, offering students little to no protection from wind and rain. Cloud 9 sent $1420 to the kinder one month before visiting Costa Maya, allowing them to purchase construction materials for the needed repairs. While on the ship, passengers who became aware of the repair project matched that donation with an additional $1440 to help the kinder continue renovations.
