Positive Legacy is the non-profit arm of Cloud 9 Adventures. The mission of our 501(c)(3) charity organization is to create meaningful opportunities for music fans and musicians to become active participants in reducing the environmental impact of the events we participate in, and to do something positive for the communities we visit.
As we travel the globe we strive to transcend cultural boundaries by learning about the needs, hopes and dreams of the communities we visit, and by taking action to connect with them and be of service to them. Positive Legacy works to develop service activities that music fans and musicians can participate in to bring a deeper sense of purpose to their entertainment and travel experiences. Take a look at our outreach project details below and find out how you can do your part to Leave a Positive Legacy in Haiti and Jamaica!
Why are shoes an important humanitarian need in Haiti? With annual per capita income of less than $400 and an average life expectancy of 53, Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. The over accumulation of sewage is an ongoing health hazard in Haiti and the basic necessities of food, clothing and shelter are lacking in most of the country.
Proper footwear is a luxury that most cannot afford, which forces people to travel barefoot through contaminated areas and increases the spread of disease. The lack of footwear also limits employment & educational opportunities for children and adults alike. Working in conjunction with Soles4Souls and One World Running, Positive Legacy is well on it’s way toward meeting the goal of collecting, transporting and donating up to 10,000 pairs of shoes to the people of Haiti.
How can you help? Positive Legacy is seeking individuals and groups willing to Host a Shoe Drive through Soles4Souls to give back to their efforts by collecting used shoes that they can sanitize and inventory for future Travel4Souls and Soles4Souls shoe donations throughout the year. Click on this online form to get the process of hosting a shoe drive started. Please note that when filling out the form you should select business/individual/college as the type of shoe drive and note Positive Legacy // Jam Cruise 10 as the type of event. Soles4Souls will provide instructions and materials for hosting your drive. Each individual is responsible for shipping the shoes they collect to one of the S4S warehouses. Individuals can also send their used shoes to S4S, and simply tag them as part of the Jam Cruise shoe drive so we can track our efforts. In partnership with Nashville-based nonprofit organization Soles4Shoes and their corporate shoe partners, Positive Legacy and S4S will be donating and distributing 5,000 - 7,000 pairs of new shoes that adhere to the school uniform policy that applies to all children in Haiti.
A partnership with One World Running (OWR), a nonprofit based in Boulder, will generate additional donations of up to 3,000 pairs of used running shoes that will be sanitized and inventoried to be distributed by OWR volunteers around Cap Haitien. You can send your lightly used running shoes to OWR where they will be sanitized, inventoried and prepared for donation. Ship shoes to One World Running/Positive Legacy Shoe Drive, Boulder Storage 6439 Arapahoe Boulder, CO 80303. Together, we can make a difference!
Join Positive Legacy in a hands on project in Labadee where we'll be planting native tree seedlings in partnership with carbon offsetting partner Trees, Water & People (TWP) and local sanitation experts Sustainable Organic Integrated Livelihoods(SOIL). The trees will be transported to a nursery built at SOIL’s compound in Cap Haitien, Haiti and will be raised with care for introduction into communities around Northern Haiti. If every passenger and artist participates in the project by taking just a few minutes to contribute, we can easily reach our goal of planting 10,000 seedlings to start the nursery.
Thousands of diverse indigenous seeds will be made available for this activity, ensuring that our efforts will increase biodiversity, stabilize hillsides, improve soil quality, provide food security and create income-generating activities for the communities of northern Haiti.
Help us cover the costs of raising the seedlings and growing them to maturity by donating to the Jam Cruise Carbon Offsetting program when you book your cabin or by calling the Cloud 9 travel department at 561-368-8922. You can also make a donation to Positive Legacy by contacting Ann Kenworthy via email: info@positivelegacy.com.
Positive Legacy is providing the funding to improve sanitary conditions at the Haiti Village Health Clinic near Cap Haitien . This clinic provides a full-range of primary care services to 5 neighboring villages. Believe it or not, they treated 3,500 patients during the cholera epidemic without any running water! Positive Legacy is financing the construction of a well and septic system, water reservoir and pump, building bathrooms with plumbing to sinks and toilets, and putting a new roof on the clinic.
This project was born of previous Positive Legacy events, where children consistently expressed interest and joy in hooping and were sad to see the hoops go back onto the ship. Rather than bring a few to share for the day, we will donate 50 hoops to the Astor Black School for the Arts in Jamaica . The effort will begin with a Day 2 cruiser hoop-making session from 11am – 12pm. We will then deliver the hoops to the primary school next to the cruise port in Falmouth and enjoy an interactive hula hoop jam with the kids.
While we are in Falmouth Jamaica , Positive Legacy will be partnering with the Astor Black School for the Arts and the Bob Moog Foundation to bring the Dr. Bob’s Sound School experience to the children. The BMF will present the history of the Moog Legacy and basics of sonic science while allowing the students to create and learn in a fun interactive atmosphere. Experiential stations consisting of different combinations of Moog gear, including theremins, keyboards, effect pedals and more will be used to teach and inspire the students.

Jam Cruise 9’s Positive Legacy Auction was a huge success, raising over $25,000! 100% of the proceeds support Positive Legacy's environmental and humanitarian projects. Special thanks go out to LEBO, who's live painting from the Rhythm Devils' set nearly $5000 and to John Hudgel who spent hundreds of hours on a hand carved guitar which was signed on board by artists and raised over $6000! We are very grateful to all who contribute to the auction's success and welcome your participation. Past auction items have included signed poster art & photographs, VIP ticket packages to summer festivals, autographed guitars, handmade jewelry, travel packages, music paraphenalia and a whole lot more. Don't miss the auction on Jam Cruise 10! If you have something that you would like to donate for the auction, please contact info (at) positivelegacy.com for more information. All auction donations are tax-deductible.
Positive Legacy runs donation drives every year on Jam Cruise, gathering specified goods to benefit those who live in the ports we visit. On Jam Cruise 9 we had great success from our passengers who donated school supplies, vitamins, toothbrushes, books and laptops for the children in Roatan and Costa Maya. With the help of cruiser Matt Whildin (who wipes the hard drives clean and installs wireless cards) we have helped start computer labs and provided internet access to people in remote places from Jamaica to Mexico and many points in between. Used laptops are always in demand so before you discard yours, consider a tax-deductible donation to Positive Legacy. Please contact info (at) positivelegacy.com for more information.
Many schools struggle to provide basic supplies for the children to receive an education. Many families struggle to meet their basic needs. Stay tuned for announcements regarding specific items needed for our biggest service project to date as we visit Labadee, Haiti. For more information, contact Ann (at) jamcruise.com. The spirit and generosity of the Jam Cruise passengers has positively touched the lives of hundreds of children in these communities...Thank you all for supporting our mission!
Carbon offsets are available for purchase at the time of booking and anytime you login to your reservation to make a payment. You can also purchase carbon offsets during embarkation and on board from TWP staff. Be proud that you have done something positive when you attend the Positive Legacy Celebration featuring Matt Butler & the Everyone Orchestra!
Positive Legacy partners with Trees, Water & People, a non-profit organization that manages award-winning carbon offsetting programs throughout Central America. Throughout Central America, more than 80% of families cook their meals over open wood fires. These open wood fires create serious problems:
To combat these problems, TWP and the Aprovecho Research Center have developed several types of fuel-efficient stoves that use up to 70% less wood than traditional open fire stoves. The technology behind the stoves is simple and very low-maintenance, and the stoves can be manufactured locally, using local materials, and adapted to meet local cooking customs.

Cloud 9 Adventures and Jam Cruisers collectively offset more than 2,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions though TWP's stove program. Last year, more than 750 passengers offest their carbon making Clould 9 and the Jam Cruise passengers one of TWP's largest carbon offset partners!

Nothing about Jam Cruise is typical cruisin’, including who we are as human beings. Therefore we welcome you the next phase of our Conscious Cruiser Program, a radical collaboration of individuals seeking to change cruise travel from the inside out. We aim to minimize the environmental impact of our travel and maximize the positive impact we have in the communities we visit; break out of the norm and shape the beautiful future. The mission of the Conscious Cruiser Program is simple. We look to engage Jam Cruise passengers to get involved with the Positive Legacy and Greening efforts through fun, interactive, and rewarding programs intended to encourage conscious and kind actions on Jam Cruise and beyond.
A Conscious Cruiser can participates in the following ways:
Learn more about all of these programs at Positive Legacy/ Greening HQ on Deck 6 next to the Zebra Bar. To volunteer for Greening Jam Cruise and Positive Legacy please contact us here for more information.
You’ve seen the world- perhaps in boots, by boat, by bike or by book. You embrace joy and celebrate life, that's why you're here on Jam Cruise. You know that life is precious and is to be enjoyed by all.
Our environmental, animal and human communities are in need. Back in our neighborhoods the global struggles play out locally. The capacity for healing our communities is what makes us human; it just takes one of us to turn the crank and get things moving.
On Jam Cruise, one lucky (and seriously committed) Jam Cruiser is going to win a one-of-a-kind Panda Bicycle. This bike has the simplicity and elegance, artistry and functionality, uniqueness and performance, and your individual personality and style. But there’s a catch, we want you to start a chain reaction of positive social and environmental change in the world.
We are asking people to come down to the Positive Legacy Headquarters; and step in front of a camera to film a 60 second pledge about what you will do with the Panda Bicycle to make a positive impact in the world. You can start an office “ride to work day”, ride the Panda to volunteer at the local bike co-op, or a shelter once a month. Teach 10 kids to ride a bike or start a community garden … the list is endless. We want to support your passion for leaving a positive legacy and are looking for your creative ideas for doing that in your community.
The person with the most compelling pledge will win a custom Panda Bicycle that will help you on your journey. Each one of the Panda Bicycles is artfully hand-crafted in Fort Collins, Colorado by skilled builders. The co-founder of Panda Bicycles and a few members of the Jam Cruise Green Team will judge the pledges and select the winner aboard the ship.
Once you are selected the fun begins. We want you to document the great things you are doing on a monthly blog. Your experience will be shared with thousands of people in the Jam Cruise community and beyond. Start thinking of your pledge now and how you will start a chain reaction.
Jam Cruise has low food & beverage waste, which is often the greatest source of waste at music events. Food is all served on reusable dishes and drinks are served in reusable cups. To handle extra beverage consumption, PLA cups made from corn starch are supplied by Cloud 9 and used in bars throughout the ship. Brews at Sea breweries also provide PLA for the microbrew bars on the pool deck. We would like to send a special thanks to Sweetwater, Breckenridge and Bells Breweries for donating PLA cups towards the Jam Cruise 10 sustainable product program.
Certified, high quality paper was used for the event program guide, all event signage and all printing needs in the production office.
Recently, MSC installed bulk dispensers in all cabin bathrooms that are re-filled regularly with marine-grade biodegradable products. This change eliminates the waste of a million toiletry bottles per year.
The Jam Cruise waste management plan uses four strategies to lower the ships solid waste impact; waste reduction, reusable products, recycling, composting and passenger education. Each year we tweak these four strategies with the goal of reducing our landfill stream and raising the total amount of material we recover to recycling and composting facilitates.
So far, 2011 has been a break though year for composting; moving from a pilot in 2010 to a full program in 2011. Greening is proud of this considering commercial composting is a rare feature of South Florida, but it's getting better! Our two composting partners, one a commercial facility operated by Waste Management and the other a start up local municipality plot, will now divert all of our compostable beer and cocktail cups out of the landfill.
Once again, we need Conscious Cruiser volunteers to help educate fellow passengers on the program. The 50 JC9 passengers who volunteered at the waste sorting stations were trained to help guide passengers to recycle their glass, plastic, aluminum and PLA cups. By adopting a highly-visible and interactive pre-sorting approach, passengers become active participants in reducing our Cruise's impact. When docked back in port, waste and recycling is offloaded and taken to facilities in the Fort Lauderdale/Miami area.

In addition to the solar panels and wind turbines that will be installed on Deck 14 near the Solar Stage during Day 1, this year JC10 passengers will have the opportunity to contribute their energy to our growing renewable energy portfolio. Thanks to our partners at Windstream, the Green Team will offer passengers the opportunity to pedal their way to a clean energy future by taking a spin on the bamboo Panda bicycle provided near the Solar Stage. This user-friendly and portable generator can be a valuable tool in teaching an appreciation of the physical energy required to produce electricity and they can be a ton of fun when given the right motivation ... jam bands!
Solar panels harness the power of the sun through photovoltaic cells or modules, which then store the energy in batteries for use anytime of the day or night. Wind turbines mounted on the ship also store energy in a second, mobile battery bank, so the clean, renewable energy can be used to power the yoga classes and the solar stage on the Pool Deck.
The Green Team & Positive Legacy aim to continually increase the amount of renewable energy harnessed on Jam Cruise every year. In addition to producing clean power on the ship, the Green Team and Positive Legacy are also pursuing opportunities to install renewable energy systems for worthy organizations on upcoming Positive Legacy projects.

Jam for Change Panel
A musical take on the highly successful and engaging Jam Cruise Greening Panel. This audience guided panel is a critical conversation on social change and revolution in our daily lives. Passion plays a major role in our discussion and this year so will music. We've opened up our panel to impromptu jams and are encouraging our artists to expresses themselves with words, tunes and voice.
JC10 Conscious Cruiser Program
We’d like to take this opportunity to recognize MSC Cruises for their efforts to employ state of the art technology on their newest ships, which has earned them multiple environmental protection certifications.
• CIAL certification for the collection and recycling of aluminum
• UNI EN ISO 9002/1994, ISO 9001:2000 and ISO 14001 certifications for environmental protection
• The Venice Blue Flag for voluntary reduction of emissions. MSC has adopted measures to reduce sulphurous anhydride (SOX) and nitrogen oxide (NOX) emissions, utilizing low sulfur diesel fuel in ecologically sensitive areas.
• MSC’s commitment to corporate responsibility and environmental protection is reflected in vessels such as the MSC Poesia, which was awarded CLEAN-SEA2 and CLEAN AIR certificates for treated emissions that achieve a significantly reduced environmental impact.
• The Poesia and all of MSC’s newest ships are designed with Cabin Monitoring Systems, a new technology which allows continuous monitoring of each cabin’s temperature and energy use, and automatically switches to energy saving mode when passengers are not in their cabins. All cabins have been outfitted with bulk dispensers, eliminating the use of tens of thousands of plastic toiletry bottles per year.
